How to Play Chess

By Omar Castaño P.

First of all, Chess is a recreational and competitive game played between two players. At the start, each player (one controlling the white pieces, the other controlling the black pieces) controls sixteen pieces.

The goal of the game is to CHECKMATE the opponent's king, whereby the king is under immediate attack (in "check") and there is no way to remove it from attack on the next move.

This game is played on a square chequered chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight square with alternated colors (generally Black and White).

The corner-square of the chessboard on the RIGHT of each player is always the WHITE SQUARE.

At the start, the pieces are settled as follows:

First Row

White Queen on the white-middle-square and Black Queen on the black-middle-square on the other side; White King on black square and Black King on white one near the Queen; then Bishops, Knights and Rooks.

Second Row

The second row (or rank) is filled with the 8 pawns.

White Pieces begin playing.
